Anyone has Staphylex 500 for mastitis?

Long story short: My GP prescribed Staphylex 500 for mastitis and told me to throw away the expressed milk as it could harm my baby’s liver. I did it although I had two other GPs and friends telling me that flucloxacillin is safe while breastfeeding. Mastitis is back just on the day I wanted to get back to breastfeeding. I’ve started the second course of antibiotics today and I was sure I wanted to breastfeed having read it was safe for bub, but now I’m hesitating because I read unclear information about this brand which says: if you’re breastfeeding, an alternative feeding method is recommended. Has anyone used this particular brand?

  • I'm sorry for the mixed advice you have received. The ingredient in Staphylex (flucloxacillin) is the antibiotic of choice for mastitis and all current clinical/medical data support the safety and efficacy of its use in breastfeeding. The brand you use will not impact the safety or efficacy of the active ingredient. There is potential for very small amounts to be found in some women's breastmilk, however they have found that it either doesn't affect baby or that it may just cause them to have more watery poos. I suppose if you notice more watery poo in baby then you can check back with a doctor in case if you're worried, however generally if baby is well otherwise, they don't advise to stop it for this reason either. Just checking in case that the doctor hasn't got you on some extremely high dose or anything right? Hope you're feeling okay xx
